The film Oil on Water is
without question the best and most sensitive piece
of work on schizophrenia that I have ever
seen. Over more than 50 years of my professional
efforts treating this problem and training
professionals in the area of treatment, I have been
very much moved by this splendid effort Directed by
Peter Matthews in South Africa. His is an honest
representation of this condition that effects
millions of people throughout the world. I believe
that it would benefit individuals with this
condition and their relatives and professionals as
well to view it.
Too long have we taken the humanity out of the
mental health professionals and substituted drugs
and/or medications to be their care givers. Too long
have we looked upon these individuals with disdain.
"While normals can speak openly and even casually
about cancer or heart disease, the topic of
schizophrenia elicits primarily emotional reactions
like fear or defensive humor. Normals are not
comfortable with the thought of a serious mentally
ill person living in their neighborhood, being in
school with them, or being in their workplace. We
still frighten them. They do not know what to expect
from us. Numerous survivors have stated that the
stigma that accompanies serious mental illness in
many ways is worse than the illness itself." -
Frederick Frese
The film "Oil on Water" is an honest attempt to
heighten awareness of this illness, debunk the
stigma and humanize mental illness."
